Birthdate: April 24, 1928, Worcester, Massachusetts, the son of John A. Marshall and Katherine T. Redican.

Education: St. John’s High School, Worcester, Massachusetts; College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts; Seminaire de Philosophie, Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome, Italy; Assumption College Graduate School, Worcester, Massachusetts; Pastoral Institute of Bishops, North American College, Rome.

Ordination to the Priesthood: December 19, 1953 in Rome by Bishop Martin J. O’Connor. Engaged in educational ministry, 1957-1961, 1969-1971 North American College, Rome; 1961-1968 Worcester, Massachusetts. 

Ordination to the Episcopacy: Elevated to Episcopate in Rome, December 14, 1971 by His Holiness, Pope Paul VI.  Ordained Bishop of Burlington January 25, 1972 by Bishops Robert F. Joyce, Bernard J. Flanagan and James A. Hickey.

Apostolic Visitor to USA Seminaries for Pope John Paul II, 1981-1989; NCCB Committees; Priestly life and Ministry, Collaborative Ministries, and Priestly Formation. Elected USA delegate to World Synod of Bishops on the Formation of Priests in the Circumstances of the Present Day, October 1990.

Installed Sixth Bishop of Springfield, Massachusetts on February 18, 1992. Years of episcopacy: 20 years and 24 days.
